Remembered this place had new ownership as we drove into town on a Sunday at about 10:30am. Big Boy was usually packed at this time but under new ownership, the lot was empty. That’s a big warning sign, but we decided to give them a chance. Waitress was nice, but seats were ripped and glass of coke was smeared with something greasy. Waitress got us a new glass though. Husband and I both had eggs over easy with sausage and toast, he had hash browns also. The service was quick enough, but bread was over risen, nothing but air and gummy yeasty dough, and absolutely drowning in some kind of butter substitute. There is a sign on the wall that offers loaves of bread for $4, but if that’s what they produce for toast, they are wildly overpriced. Eggs were fine, hash browns were greasy, but the most disappointing thing was the sausage links. Absolutely disgusting, we couldn’t eat them. In a town like Alpena, sausage matters! The waitress did offer to take the sausage off the bill, and did so. Obviously the owners believe the quality of food doesn’t matter, but it is cheap and inedible food for which they want quality food prices. This is probably why the lot was empty on a Sunday morning. Never going back.
Looks like an a standard diner with lots of white-haired patrons, but food was fresh from scratch. Excellent clam chowder and fish. Waitress and staff were cheerful and attentive. Only failure - sides like fries and hash browns were lukewarm.
Great place to eat! Excellent service! Excellent food! We felt very welcomed and food was quick and hot!
Fried everything, chicken wrap was dry even the lettuce taste dry... Very odd. Only thing i enjoyed was my soda and my company. Ordered a nice dinner with slabs of turkey mashed potatoes on top with a few fries onion rings on top with gravy. .. Yet still very dry and had little actually flavor. Worst part is i insisted on going here and the boyfriend and son were more disappointed then myself. Will not waste my time nor anyone else's top go back. :/
Had lunch today I had the pulled pork excellent and their curly fries are home made and thick and crispy and perfect. Service great and enjoyed very much.
